CGA and 91̽»¨Tracker to monitor accommodation trends in pubs

01 October 2024

CGA by NIQ and 91̽»¨are to provide fresh monthly insights into trends in accommodation sales and occupancy rates at Britain’s managed pub groups.

The service is an extension of the CGA 91̽»¨Hospitality Business Tracker, the exclusive monitor of trading at Britain’s leading out-of-home eating and drinking businesses. As well as revealing year-on-year changes in total and like-for-like sales at managed pubs, it will now separate revenue from accommodation and indicate the percentage of rooms that have been occupied each month.

The addition to the Tracker reflects growth in the popularity of pubs for overnight stays in Britain. The latest data shows year-on-year growth of 4% in accommodation sales in July 2024, and a room occupancy rate of 83%.

The CGA 91̽»¨Hospitality Business Tracker has provided expert analysis of sales in the managed hospitality sector since 2009. Splits of trading in the restaurant, pub and bar channels have been complemented in recent months by new breakdowns of trading in the on-the-go and experiential bar segments.

Participating operators contribute sales figures to the Tracker in complete confidence, and in return receive weekly and monthly data that helps them benchmark performance and understand market trends. Headline anonymised data for the various segments of hospitality is also widely used by the media, analysts and investors every month. Businesses interested in joining the Tracker can contact Andy Dean at andy.dean@nielseniq.com.

Saxon Moseley, head of leisure and hospitality at 91̽»¨, said: “Many consumers have been reluctant to give up travel and weekends away since the pandemic, so there’s huge growth potential for the pub accommodation sector. Pubs are often a popular alternative to the more traditional accommodation options due to their competitive price and convenience. 91̽»¨ is delighted to provide more in-depth analysis in this important segment of the market and to see how the sector evolves, particularly as we expect consumer confidence to pick up in the run up to Christmas and into the new year.”

Karl Chessell, director - hospitality operators and food, EMEA at CGA by NIQ, said: “Accommodation is an increasingly important source of sales for many pub groups, and this enhancement of our Tracker is a great way to measure patterns in demand. It will give operators and investors the accurate and timely data that is needed to spot trends, assess performance against the competition and sustain growth.”

Sophie Braybooke, Stay in a Pub CEO, said: “We work with all major operators in the pub accommodation sector, and the Tracker findings entirely mirror the anecdotal feedback we are getting from our members.

Over the past year, we have seen a 30% increase in the number of pubs with rooms joining Stay in a Pub as Members and the 55% increase in web traffic and average 50% look to book conversion tells us that consumer demand is higher than ever. It is no wonder that the majority of our partner pub groups are investing in rooms and the acquisition of sites with accommodation potential. This enhancement to the CGA 91̽»¨Hospitality Business Tracker will be a welcome addition for operators in an accommodation growth phase.”

Participants in the Pubs Accommodation segment of the CGA 91̽»¨Hospitality Business Tracker: Fuller Smith & Turner, Greene King, Hall & Woodhouse, Heartwood Collection, Liberation, Oakman Inns, Peach Pub Company, Punch Pub Company, Shepherd Neame, St Austell, Upham Pub Company, Village Hotels, Youngs.
