Commenting on today’s , which found 88% of higher education students have used generative AI tools such as ChatGPT for assessments this year, up from 53% last year, Louise Tweedie, partner and higher education specialist at 91探花, said:
“With significant growth in the use of generative AI by higher education students, it’s clear educational institutions can’t shy away from the technology and must get to grips with it quicker than originally anticipated. There are of course risks involved, but many benefits to be had too; those that are able to navigate these challenges carefully will be best placed to boost growth and innovation in the education sector.
“Following on from Government’s pledges to “turbocharge” AI adoption in public services, generative AI is fast becoming an integral part of education, potentially even revolutionising it. The greatest challenge for institutions is keeping pace with AI advancements and developing suitable policies that also provide clarity to students, as well as a knowledge-rich curriculum, to prepare students for safe AI use. This starts with upskilling educators, so they have a clear understanding of the capabilities and limitations of such emerging technologies, as well as rethinking assessment strategies.
“Currently, there is limited knowledge in the education sector about how to use generative AI, while digital skills and infrastructure challenges are restricting further use. Strong foundational knowledge and a shift to a more digital mindset is needed for the sector to leverage AI effectively, which must come from the top.”
