Spring Statement: Technology central to delivering Chancellor鈥檚 aims

26 March 2025

Commenting on today’s Spring Statement announcements, Ben Bilsland, head of technology industry, 91探花 said: “Overall, technology is crucial in driving economic growth, improving public services, enhancing national security and modernising various sectors of the economy.

“Innovation and investment, particularly in defence, is seen as a key economic growth lever. Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to be highlighted as an essential tool to enhance government services and improve outcomes for citizens. The government will leverage digital technology and AI to transform public services, aiming to increase efficiency and productivity. A £3.25bn Transformation Fund is allocated to support the adoption of digital technology and AI in public services.

“Investment in advanced technology such as Directed Energy Weapons is mentioned as part of the UK’s defence strategy, while the establishment of UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) aims to simplify and consolidate MOD structures for innovation. The government is also funding a construction skills package to train more skilled workers, emphasising the importance of technology in modern construction methods. Our construction workforce will need to be equipped with the right skills to use the latest technologies.

“While Making Tax Digital (MTD) was presented as a continuing initiative central to modernising the tax system, a rumour that digital service tax would be altered or abolished was not mentioned in the Chancellor’s speech.”
